1. APCUG thanks Jim Evans & Tom Jones for their service to APCUG

A big thank you to both Jim and Tom for their many contributions to APCUG. We appreciate the time and energy they gave to the organization.

Note from Barbara: I met Jim at the Face to Face meeting in Tulsa in 2006. He is knowledgeable, charming and gracious, and wonderful at making new people feel right at home. If you've never got a chance to meet him, just be aware that many of the aspects of the APCUG that you enjoy were initiated, and guided along by Jim. He will be missed. If you'd like to send along your thanks personally, let me know. I'll be happy to forward them.

2. Introducing two new Directors

APCUG is pleased to announce that Kathy Jacobs and Claudette Marshall were elected to the Board of Directors at the recent BOD meeting.

Kathy is the former president of the Phoenix PC Users Group. She frequently speaks at AZ User Groups and has done the AZ Alliance of Computer Clubs tour three times and will be presenting to the groups again in December of 08.

Kathy is a Microsoft MVP (PowerPoint and OneNote) and is currently a PowerPoint and OneNote consultant, trainer, and writer. She does a lot of social media and can be found on a wide variety of Social Networks around the web, including Plurk, Twitter, FaceBook, Spock, and many others. Her writings can be found around the web. She has her own site ( www.OnPPT.com ), and blog (Vitamin CH). She screencasts to help her visitors learn Office, social media sites, and other tools. She loves to use and show off SnagIt, Camtasia, and Jing. She was part of the organizing committee for PodCampAZ 07, as well as a speaker there. She may be doing the same for PodCampAZ 08.

Claudette Rizk Marshall has been a member of the Board of Directors of Worcester Computer Society since 1993. She has been President of Worcester Computer Society since 2002. She has an Associates degree in Mathematics from Castleton State College in VT and a Bachelors degree in Archaeology from Bridgewater State College in MA. She has been very active in Archaeology and the use of computers in that field. Claudette has worked on such projects as data analysis, predictability and catchment analysis, modeling of special site data locations for organizations including Harvard University and the Massachusetts State Archeologists Office. She is President and CEO of Marshall Consulting which she opened in 1995. She later added Marshall Computing. These businesses successfully serve the Central Massachusetts area.

Welcome to the team!!

5. Midwest User Group Conference fast approaching

The Midwest Regional Conference themed “Technology for the Rest of Us” will take place in Chicago on September 19-21, 2008. The Chicago Computer Society will host the event. They have hosted successful Mini Expo’s for the past several years and an APCUG Conference and a regional event several years earlier. You can expect two full days of information; there will be many roundtable discussions of interest to both leadership and users. There will be exhibits provided by well-known vendors and this will be a great opportunity to meet, share ideas, and interact with other user group members.

The registration cost includes a T-shirt, goodie bag, door prizes, and meals.

Check the website, http://mwug.apcug.org/, often, as information is posted as it becomes available. Registration for the event opened July 1st on their website. Online Registration by September 1 is: $35.00, snail mail registration postmarked by September 1 is also $35.00; postmarked after Sept 1 and received by Sept 15 is $40.00. Registration after Sept. 14 is $49, including walkins.

6. Visit the New Mindshare Site (from the Mindshare Team)

Have you set up your individual and group profiles on our new Mindshare portal? Our new site, launched in partnership with the User Group Support Services (UGSS) group, gives you up-to-date information on your favorite Microsoft technologies and enables you to get more exposure for your group and post your events online. Come experience the new Mindshare site http://www.mindshare.codezone.com and let us know what you think!
Here are the steps to get you started:

Step 1: Individual User profile. (Under the My Mindshare tab.) All users, interested UG members and UG leaders should create a new login using a Live ID by clicking on the Sign In button in the upper left area of the screen.

Step 2: User Group profile. Group leaders should create a public GROUP profile for their user group by clicking the User Groups tab and selecting Add User Group (on the left). Group leaders can invite members to associate with the group profile via e-mail from this page. Members can also notify leaders to create a group profile from the User Groups page.

Step 3: Microsoft Connect. The “My Connect” section hosts downloadable Mindshare content (presentations, newsletters, articles, etc.). You must first login to the Mindshare site and be associated with a user group as a group leader or member. Click the User Groups tab and click the Group Event Content Link on the right menu. Access content for your event by choosing Click here in the center of the page.

Please note: All groups and their members need to enter their information on this new site. No past Mindshare registration data was migrated from the previous site. If you manage your group's Web site, please take a moment and update your Mindshare link to www.mindshare.codezone.com.

Features coming soon: newsletter subscription sign up, review software ordering and submission of reviews.

APCUG Member Discounts

Although the Southwest Computer Conference is not sponsored by APCUG, I always like to share the discounts with APCUG-member groups. Please feel free to forward this e-mail to your members. Please note that Corel has discontinued their online user group discount. Groups were asked not to post the discount information / code on their website since the discount was specifically for UG members. A group posted the discount info and Corel is no longer able to offer that type of discount to UGs. They will always offer a discount at conferences. If something changes in the future, I'll let you know.
